CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF
PENNY AVERELL
Penny Averell, loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend – passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family on Sunday, October 23rd. Penny was born on June 3, 1965, in Rhodes, Greece. She immigrated to the United States with her parents and brother when she was a young child. She grew up in Warren, OH, where she graduated valedictorian from Warren Western Reserve High School. Penny then attended the University of Akron where she met her soulmate, Douglas. They loved each other infinitely and shared an undying commitment to each other with a love that grew each day.
Ever since she was a little girl, Penny dreamed of becoming an artist. She enjoyed drawing and painting for the people she loved and often created artwork as gifts to express her gratitude to others. As she entered her 40s and 50s, she dedicated much of her time to the study of oil painting. She had a special gift for painting impressions of light and seeing the world in full color.
Her greatest passion in life was her family! She loved being “Yiayia,” and had the most special bond with each and every one of her children & grandchildren. Known as the woman with a heart of gold, Penny will be most remembered for the unconditional love, kindness, and selflessness she showed to whomever she encountered. Penny was the sweetest person you could ever meet and was truly an angel on Earth. When you were in her presence, you felt fully seen, loved, understood, and embraced.
Penny is survived by her soulmate and loving husband of 38 years, Douglas Averell; her two daughters, Cassandra Clouser and Nicole Papas (Jason); her parents Mike and Flora Hatzis; her brother Nick Hatzis (Debbie); her adored grandchildren Ray, Grayson, Anna, TJ, and Zoe; and many special aunts, in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews, both here and abroad.
Penny will be deeply, deeply missed by her family and friends. May her memory be eternal, and her soul rest among the Saints!
