Peter Stephen Boutsicaris, M.D. (Dr. Boots) passed away peacefully at his home by the lake in Sandusky, Ohio on October 29, 2022 at age 65 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born September 4, 1957 at Akron General Hospital to Helen and Stephen Boutsicaris. He is survived by his wife of 34 years Gwynne; children Christina (Jeffrey), Stephanie, and Jonathan; sister Martha; nephew Andrew, niece Eleni; sister-in-law Bonnie and brother-in-law Rob Fagerson; niece Kaylie, nephew Trevor.
Dr. Boutsicaris graduated from Copley High School in 1975. He completed his general surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Dr. Boutsicaris practiced as a surgeon for 34 years, predominantly at hospitals in northeastern Ohio including Medina, Barberton, Akron, and Canton. Throughout his career he enjoyed helping to train countless medical students and residents. This included a third year medical student from the University of Michigan, Gwynne, who he would later marry. His daughter Christina and nephew Andrew followed in his footsteps to become physicians.
Peter loved spending time with family and friends. His favorite place to spend his free time was on his boat, cruising Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie. He enjoyed refurbishing vintage cars, including a 1979 Corvette. He enjoyed frequent travels with his wife. Kastelli, Crete, Greece, his mother’s ancestral home, was his favorite place to visit.
Thank you to the University of Chicago and Drs. Liao and Malec for their excellent patient-centered care. Thank you to Mercy Medical Center, Canton, Ohio where he spent the last many years of his medical career from 2005-2021. They provided a family-like work atmosphere, allowing him to provide high level patient care in a compassionate manner. Dr. Boutsicaris loved his work and was so sad when cancer took it away from him. As a general and trauma surgeon, he worked through many long, tiring nights. He positively impacted so many lives, often providing life-saving care. The world is a better place because he was here.
