Peter George

Peter George died peacefully on May 19, 2011, with his dear wife Sophie at his side.

Highly regarded by friends, colleagues, and clients as a man of profound integrity, his devotion to his wife and children and the quiet dignity with which he lived his life were his greatest gifts to this world.

Born in Akron, Ohio on January 23, 1928, to Helen and Paul George, Peter graduated from Central High School in 1946. He attended New York's Juilliard School of Music and, following his service in the U.S. Army, Kent State University. Peter shared his love and talent for music throughout his life, serving as Choir Director at St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church in Canton, Ohio, as well as the vocal soloist at First Presbyterian Church on E. Market Street in Akron. Additionally, he soloed in many local concerts. He was a member of both the Choir and the Men's Chorus at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron.

Joining the accounting firm of Ernst and Ernst in 1959, Peter became a partner in 1970. He authored Ernst and Young's first manual on Ohio state taxes and served as a consultant on subsequent editions. He was a Lifetime Member of the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants and served as President in its Cleveland Chapter. He was also a member of the tax Club of Cleveland.

As a lifelong member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Men's Club as well as the Order of AHEPA. An avid golfer, Peter enjoyed the challenge and camaraderie of the sport. His greatest joy was being surrounded by friends. Golf tournaments in Florida, annual trips to Canada, breakfasts with the guys, Friday night Zips games were among his fondest times.

Preceded in death by his parents and brother, George Barbara George; he is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sophie nee Lazos; children, Stephen George, Dean Shannon George, Christina Peter Manousos; brother, Nick Helen George; sister, Mary Clyde Bess; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a loving Papou to Niko, Sofia, and Demetri, who will miss him very much.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron, Ohio 44304, with Rev. Fr. Jerry F. Hall officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to The Anthony D. Retikas Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church or Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Dr., P.O. Box 1950, Clarksburg, MD 20871.
