Philip Edward Hockwalt, age 71, lost his long, brave battle with Alzheimer's Disease on Christmas morning. He died peacefully, with his devoted wife Jean by his side.
Phil was born September 5, 1940, in Canton, Ohio to John and Mary Hockwalt. He grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, attending St. Joseph's School. He graduated from the Archbishop Hoban High School and the University of Notre Dame. Phil cherished the friendships he made at Hoban and Notre Dame, remaining an active alumnus. He attended regular lunches with the ``Hoban guys' until this month. He still followed Notre Dame football with a passion, reading each ``Blue & Gold' newsletter cover to cover. Go Irish!
After beginning his professional life at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in the Accounting Department, he then received his Master's Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Akron and began his new career as a school psychologist with the Akron Public Schools. After several years, he established his private practice and for nearly 30 years, Phil helped his clients face and deal with life's challenges. One of the hardest things he had to do as a result of his condition was to retire from his practice, as he found it so rewarding.
Phil's three heartbroken daughters will miss his wise counsel, and cherish their many memories of him: summers on Cape Cod, sledding at Hawkins Hill, the Hiking Sprees in the Metro Parks, learning to drive stick shift in the brand new Mustang, and him cheating at every single board game they ever played! Each of them married young men who became the sons he never had, and he loved each of them as his own. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, and he loved watching them grow up into the delightful young people they have become. He was so very proud of them.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Hockwalt, and son-in-law, Michael Calhoun. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jean; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dan Bell of Bath, Elizabeth and Erich Leipold of Copley and Dianne and Fred Teceno of Osterville, Mass.; grandchildren, McKenzie and Philip Bell, Olivia and Jacob Calhoun, Thomas Leipold and Delaney, Callahan and Bennett Teceno.
