R. Bruce Silver, age 86, a lifelong Akron resident, passed away on July 20 after a lengthy bout with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Bruce had a full and successful professional and personal life. He was one of the principals at Akron Chemical Company now AkroChem retiring as Executive Vice President. He was also Chairman of Revlis Corporation, an AkroChem subsidiary. Bruce was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he was twice a member of the Vestry. He also served as treasurer and was involved with Habitat for Humanity through St. Paul's. He was a member and President of the board of trustees of Akron General Medical Center, a trustee of the Firestone Bank, a trustee of Old Trail School, a member of Portage Country Club, and a graduate of Western Reserve Academy. He was a proud member of the class of '45 at Princeton University where he earned a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during World War II. Bruce spent many wonderful summers at Point O' Woods on Fire Island, N.Y. He was an avid sailor and loved to sail in the waters of Great South Bay in his sailboat "Silver Mist". Bruce was a devoted family man, father of three loving daughters with his wife, Margaret "Peggy" who predeced him as did his daughter, Catherine Robert McNamara. Bruce will be greatly missed by his daughters, Margie "Barrie" Peter Allen and Patricia Silver; his wife, Jean, step children, Robin, Sarah, and Taylor Smith and Margaret Jim Bell; and grandchildren, Molly, James, and Brian McNamara and Sarah and James Bell. Uncle Bruce leaves behind 13 nephews and nieces, 17 great nephews and nieces and two great-great nieces.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. SATURDAY at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1361 W. Market St., with Rev. Mark J. Pruitt officiating. Private interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
