Raymond D. Gates , 96, of Stow, passed away April 22, 2022. Ray was born on October 10, 1925 in Akron to David A. and Florence Gates.
He married Betty and they were married for 60 years and together they had a son David and daughter Barbara. Ray was an Army veteran of WWII, serving in both Europe and Pacific Theaters. Ray received a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Akron. He started his career at Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. and also worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass and Morgan Adhesives among others. He was chairmen and monthly newsletter editor of the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Society.
Ray was active in Boy Scouts of America at troop, district and council levels. He was ordained a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Akron. Later, ordained an Elder at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Cuyahoga Falls, where he served as a Trustee and newsletter Editor.
Raymond was preceded in death by parents, David A. and Florence Gates, wife, Betty, sisters, Dorothy (Jack) Nigh and Maxine (Sam) Wagner. He is survived by children, David and Barbara; nephews, Chuck, Bob and Bill Wagner.
Calling Hours will be Monday, May 2 from 5:30-7:30 P.M. at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd St. Cuyahoga Falls, 44223. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, May 3 at Noon at the Funeral Home with Rev. Stephanie Crossland officiating. Burial will follow at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
The family asks for everyone to wear a face mask .
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to your local PBS Station or Great Trail Council.
