Richard King Paige passed away Monday, October 27, 2014.
Born March 16, 1929, Dick graduated from Buchtel High School and Wooster College. He served in the Active Naval Reserves. After a four year assignment with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, he joined First National Bank of Akron (now First Merit), retiring in 1983 as Vice-President of Advertising and Public Relations. He then began a career in real estate sales partnering with his wife, Gini.
Active in the Akron community, Dick served on the boards of the Northern Ohio Golf Charities, Akron Area Boy Scouts, Downtown Akron Kiwanis Club, Dapper Dan Club, Akron Press Club, Akron Zoo, and was active in many fund-raising campaigns. He served as chairman of the World Series of Golf, one of the forerunners of the Bridgestone Invitational, and had over 45 years as a tournament volunteer chairing various committees and doing whatever needed to be done. In later years, he rated golf courses for the Northern Ohio Golf Association.
Always passionate about the game of golf, Dick was recognized as one of the area's top amateur players. He was a two-time Akron Open champion, and was named Player of the Year by the Akron District Golf Association which he also served as president. He was a six-time club champion at Portage Country Club. He played in the U.S. Open, two U.S. Amateurs, and was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
He was preceded in death by his parents Harland and Helen Paige; sisters Elizabeth Mitchell and Edith Minns, twin brother Robert; step-mother Winifred Paige; and step-sister Carol Paterakis; as well as his beloved dog Holly. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Gini; daughters Diana Sheeks (Aurora, Ohio) and Roberta Paige (Rifle, CO.); grandchildren: Jennifer Stout, Ryan Rebhan, Paige, Preston, and Holden Sheeks; brothers-in-law Charles Mitchell and George Paterakis; several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd, on Thursday from 4-8 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church Chapel, 1361 W. Market St., Akron.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of VNS, c/o Akron General Foundation, 400 Wabash Ave., Akron, Ohio 44307-2463, Autism Speaks, 1060 State Rd., 2nd Floor, Princeton, NJ 08540, austismspeaks.org or a charity of one's choice. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dick's hospice caregivers Mary Ellen, Jason, Shelly, and Bev for their kindness, compassion, and loving care.
