Richard R. "Dick" Smith , devoted husband, father, brother and friend, died Monday, September 2, 2024, in Cuyahoga Falls. He was born December 16, 1939, in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
After graduating from Altoona High School, Richard earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Virginia Tech, then a master's degree in chemistry and a doctorate in polymer science at the University of Akron.
Richard and his wife Sue met nearly 68 years ago and married in 1961. They had three children and raised their family in Cuyahoga Falls. Richard retired from Goodyear after a 40-year career as a research chemist. He held numerous patents for materials and processes he developed or co-developed while at Goodyear.
Richard loved to explore and traveled extensively both abroad and domestically. He especially treasured trips with his family. Listening to live and recorded classical music was one of his favorite pastimes. He had a green thumb, surrounding the family home with vibrant gardens and landscaping. He was an avid photographer and lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan. Sometimes he even cheered for the Browns.
Richard served on the board of trustees at Falls Library and in various leadership positions with Grandview United Methodist Church, where he was a member for 60 years. He also volunteered in various capacities with local schools, churches, homeless shelters and service organizations.
He is survived by his wife, Sue; daughter, Allison and son, Tim; sister, Marion (Harry) Conerty; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Charlotte Smith, his brother, Donald, and his son, Eric.
Private services will be held for the family, and a Celebration of Life is planned for October.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to a charity serving our community.
