Richard C. Canterna
, loving husband, father, and grandfather passed away at the age of 76.
Richard (Rich) was born on December 17, 1946, to Domenic and Freda Canterna, and grew up in Freeport, PA. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1964 and attended Clarion State College where he played collegiate basketball. He completed his education at Salem University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1969. Rich enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 1969, completing his training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and served until his Honorary Discharge at the rank of Specialist Five in 1975.
On October 26, 1979, he married Linda Donofrio and together they built their life in Akron, Ohio where they raised their two sons, Matthew (Matt) and Daniel (Dan), and he enjoyed a career in sales. Rich was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who treasured time with his family and always put his family first. He was there in a moment’s notice to lend a hand, or an ear, to family, friends, or neighbors no matter the circumstance.
Rich loved sports throughout the course of his life, including playing baseball and basketball from his youth through college, and as a fan of his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Liverpool Football Club. He also enjoyed gardening, trips to Gallucci’s (and great Italian food), family vacations to the beach and trips to Hawaii with Linda, and ending a good day with a Peroni in his hand and his beloved dog Macey on his lap. Rich had the gift of gab and an infectious smile, and was a friend to all that he met. He will be remembered for his kind soul, his selfless spirit, and his optimistic love of life.
Rich is survived by his beloved wife Linda, his two children Matt and Dan, his sister Sandra, his grandchildren Luca, Dominic, and Mila, and many cousins.
A memorial service will be held at a later date this spring.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rich’s name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation or the ASPCA.
Services in care of The Billow Funeral Homes & Crematory, Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Road Akron, OH 44333.
