Robert C. Johnstone Bob, born January 16, 1947, died July 24, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bob was a 1965 graduate of Firestone High School. He attended Bowling Green State University until 1967 when he served his country by joining the U.S. Coastguard. During his service he became certified as a Navy Seal Scuba Diver and spent an 11 month tour of duty in Vietnam on the U.S.S. Sebaggo, a Coastguard cutter.
After his service in the Coastguard, he became a photojournalist for an Ohio newspaper and later resumed his career as a photographer for a Scottsdale, Arizona paper. He retired from the newspaper and spent a few years managing a popular restaurant in Phoenix. When the restaurant was sold, he moved back to Ohio where he remained until his death.
Bob was a kind and gentle man who was a fiercely loyal and loving son, brother, and friend. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tease and make people laugh.
He was exceptionally bright and knew the answers to just about anything you would ask him. We always said he would have made a bundle if he'd ever been on Jeopardy! He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Bob is survived by his mother, Vivienne S. Johnstone; his sister, Ann J. Peterson; his nephew, William R. Peterson; his great-nephew, Jason S. Mise, Jr.; his great-niece, Ava BoAnne Bailey; and his cousin, Ardis Patricia Grant. He is also survived by his dear friends, Deloris Davis, Ken Kirby, and his friends from Marco Island where he spent his winters, Kathy and Bob. He was preceded in death by his father, Russell R. Johnstone, and his niece, Allyson S. Peterson.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the exceptional and compassionate care given to Bob by his caretakers, Becky Strain, Deloris Davis, Cheryl Moorer, his Hospice nurse, Laura Sanders, his physician, Dr. Steven Oyakawa, and the staff at Crossroads Hospice of Green. We would also like to thank our family friend and pastor, Clifford Hayes for his counsel, prayers, and officiating at Bob's service along with Pastor Derek Starr Redwine.
A memorial service will be held in the Chancel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St., on Thursday, July 28, 2011 at 1 p.m. Reception in Wright-Herberich Hall at the church immediately following the service. A private burial for the family and close friends will be on Friday at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Burial Park.
