Robert "Red" Monroe Jones
Robert "Red" Monroe Jones, 79, long-time Fairlawn-Copley resident, went home to be with the Lord October 6, 2017.
Bob was born January 20, 1938, in Lakewood, OH, to Monroe Morris and Jean (Turner) Jones. In 1947 the family moved to the Akron area where Bob spent the rest of his life.
A 1956 graduate of Buchtel High School, Bob was an All-City member of the 1955 city championship football team. In 1960 he graduated from Denison University, where he lettered in lacrosse and football. He belonged to Beta Theta PI. From college he served 1960-63 as a medic with the U.S. Army.
In 1963 Bob joined Travelers Insurance Co. and in 1968 Paul White Insurance. In 1975 he co-founded Roughley and Jones Insurance Agency, which became Jones and Wenner Agency, retiring in 2013 as Chairman. He served on many insurance boards.
In 1963 Bob married his beloved Mary McQuigg. She survives him along with his daughters, Mindy (F. Nelson) Blount of Barrington, RI, Melissa (John) Meyer, of Mentor, OH; grandchildren, F. Nelson Blount III, Nathan Meyer, Calvin Blount, Emily Meyer, and Eliza Blount; brother, Thomas Gilmore (Pattie) Jones of Mena, Arkansas;and sister- and brother-in-law, Martha (McQuigg) and Sam Salem of Akron, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Richard Turner Jones.
Active in community affairs, Bob received the Fairlawn Mayor's Award as Outstanding Civic Leader for services including: president, North Eastern Ohio Bantam Football Association; president, Copley Fairlawn Schools Foundation and many more.
Bob played adult softball and pursued his lifelong passion with golf. At various times he held memberships at Westfield, Sharon, and Fairlawn Country Clubs. For 48 years he served on the Board of the Northern Ohio Golf Charities.
Church and family were foremost in Bob's priorities. He belonged to The Chapel in Akron, attended The First Baptist Church of Hilton Head, and at one time was active in The Bath Church.
Arrangements are being handled by Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd, Fairlawn, where visitation will be on Friday, October 13, from 4 to 8 PM. The Memorial Service will be 11 AM Saturday in The Memorial Chapel at The Chapel, 135 Fir Hill, Akron, OH 44304. Private interment will be at Rittman Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Haven of Rest Ministries, Samaritan's Purse, Wounded Warriors, or a charity of choice. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
