ADVERTISING EXECUTIVE, CIVIC LEADER, LAY PASTOR
Ad Exec, Civic Leader, and Lay Pastor, Robert W. Loos Jr. died on November 15th after a long illness.
"Bob Jr." was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but spent most of his 74 years in Akron, a city that he loved. Loos graduated from Western Reserve Academy in 1952, and received a BA in 1956 from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. where he was captain of the Tennis and Squash Teams.
In 1958, Loos moved back to Akron to work with his father Robert Sr., at McDaniel, Fisher & Spelman Advertising, which later became Loos & Sexauer. Loos stayed at the firm for 35 years, rising from Account Executive to Chairman and CEO. Loos was known for his amazing radio spots for numerous clients, winning dozens of awards, including the International Broadcasting Award from the Hollywood Radio & Television Society in 1973. Loos was a leader in political advertising, lending his talents to many worthwhile candidates and causes, and bringing the first plastic flag-like yard signs to Akron in 1988. Loos' boundless energy for community service was legendary, he was a founding board member of the Akron Roundtable, and as Chairman of Akron Civic Theatre, helped to save the downtown icon from the wrecking ball in the 1960's. Loos also served on the boards of the Urban Design and Fine Arts Commission, Akron Regional Development Board, American Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America Great Trail Council, Akron Advertising Club, E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Center, the Akron Symphony, and countless others.
Loos also devoted much of his life to his Christian Faith, serving as an Adult Sunday School Teacher at "The Chapel" for over a decade, and building its Adult Singles Class to over 400 people in 1979. Loos became a lay pastor in 1980, helping numerous congregations, and serving as Interim Pastor at the Chapel in Portage Lakes from 1980-84. Loos was a member of the Akron City Club former President and Portage Country Club various committees for over thirty years, until ill health forced him to resign.
Loos leaves behind his devoted wife of 33 years, Paula Canter Loos; who while working at SummaCare, selflessly guided his care for the past fifteen years, since a series of strokes slowed down this once active man. Loos's children include, Robert W. Loos III Rob of Los Angeles, Calif., Dr. Julia C. Loos of Tampa, Fla., and Cristan S. McCarty and husband Brian, of Akron. Loos has three grandchildren, Jamison Loos, a sophomore at Reed College in Portland, Oro., Emma Loos, a 10th grader at Marymount High School in Los Angeles, Calif., and Taylor McCarty, a vibrant two year old in Akron. Loos' brother and sister-in-law, Jackson and Chris Loos, live in Edmonds, Wash. Loos' parents, Lucille and Bob Loos Sr., precede him in death, as did his first wife, Carolyn Klingstedt Loos.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Rev. Knute Larson officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the funeral home 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
