Bob was born on April 25, 1925 in Akron and was the son of Henry and Louise (Kiefer) Schmidt. As a teenager, he worked with his father in the family's Purespring water business and was a proud Eagle Scout. He graduated from East High School in 1943 and served in WWII as an infantryman in Europe. He was injured in combat and awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, Bob received a BS in Civil Engineering from Case Institute of Technology in 1949. From 1955 until 1979, he served initially with the Northeast Ohio Area Development Board and became executive director of the Area Progress Board and the Akron Regional Development Board. Bob loved the Akron area and was instrumental in its economic growth during his tenure. He served on many boards including the Ohio International Trade and Investment Committee, the American Industrial Development Council, the Summit County Planning Commission and the Akron Convention Bureau. He was a member and past president of the Akron Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a charter member of the Association of Ohio Commodores for his outstanding service to the State of Ohio.
In addition to his family, Bob's loves included fishing and camping, woodworking, and traveling the world with the love of his life, Edna. He also held a private pilot's license and a Ham radio license. Early on, Bob developed a love for sailing at the South Shore Yacht Club in Portage Lakes where he was a commodore and along with his first mate Edna, enjoyed racing their lightning-class sailboat. Throughout their lives they spent many good times cruising with their sailboat and trawler on the Great Lakes, the Intracoastal Waterway System and the Bahamas. After retiring, Bob also enjoyed meeting with his Friday lunch group.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Louise Kiefer Koski. He is survived by Edna (Geiger) who was his best friend for 62 years of marriage; daughter, Carol (Dave Pulk) of Williamsburg, VA; son, Ken of Pleasanton, CA; daughter, Barb (Kevin Martin) of Stow and daughter, Martha (fiancé Steve Smith) of Wooster.
