Robert H. Svenson, Jr.
Robert Henry Svenson, Jr. born May 31, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Fathers Day, June 19th 2011, surrounded by the love of his family at VNS Hospice. Bob celebrated his 90th birthday at home with friends and family three weeks earlier.
He was a kind, gentle, caring person with a great sense of humor. He dearly loved his wife of 47 years, Shirley Foltz Osborne and his family. They will miss him greatly.
Bob graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and was inducted into the PI Tau Sigma honorary engineering fraternity and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. During WWII, he worked as a Developmental Engineer in the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington, D.C.
In 1945 he joined the B. F. Goodrich Company in Akron as an engineer. He worked for Goodrich for 41 years both domestically and internationally. He lived in Columbia, Australia and Mexico on longer term projects and also worked on projects in Peru, India, Liberia, the Netherlands, and the Philippines. He retired from his position as a Project Manager Engineer for the Tire Division in 1986. His love of travel took him to over 60 different countries.
He was a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio and served actively in the Akron P.E. Chapter. He was also a life member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers and a past president of the local chapter. In 1980, he was the recipient of the Centenary of Service medal for contributing outstanding service to the local engineering society.
He was an active volunteer for the Metropolitan Parks and could often be seen walking the trails with his beloved Border collie, Clinton. He also volunteered at Grace U.C.C. Food Program, and the Humane Society of Greater Akron Pawsibilities. Bob, who was proud of being an Eagle Scout, helped lead a bilingual troop in Bogota, Colombia and troops in Akron. He was a member and past president of the Lafayette Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was a member of the Downtown Kiwanis, Rubber City and Cuyahoga Falls Stamp Clubs, Monday Seniors and Thursday Kiwanis Bowling Leagues, Sweet Swinging Seniors Golf League and the Marching and Chowder Club.
He was an active member of the Bath United Church of Christ. He was Chairman of the Board of Trustees for several years and was involved in the groundwork that allowed gas well drilling on church property.
He is survived by Shirley; four children, Peg E. Faithful Bob, John Svenson Cathy Karin Snyder Loren, and Ted Svenson; step-children, Rich Osborne Maria, Wendy Osborne Cooper, and Deborah Osborne Hughes, and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at Bath United Church of Christ, 3980 W. Bath Rd., Friday June 24th at 11:00 am with Rev. Mark W. Frey and Rev. Maureen Webber officiating. Burial service will be private. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
