Robert Harmer Walsh, 88, passed away in Orem, Utah, on January 25, 2011, from complications of kidney disease and diabetes.
Born September 12, 1922, to John Robert and Isabel Harmer Walsh, he grew up in Farmington, Utah. During World War II he served in the armed forces as a waist gunner on a B-17. He married Arlene Andrew on October 4, 1944, in the Salt Lake Temple and was married 61 years before she preceded him in death.
He graduated from Brigham Young University and obtained a Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1953. He then moved with his family to Ohio, where he was a research chemist for PPG Industries until his retirement. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings in Akron, Ohio, including bishop, stake patriarch and sealer in the Columbus Ohio Temple. He and his wife found great joy in serving three senior missions to Ireland, New Zealand and the Ohio Cleveland-Akron Mission.
Survivors include a sister; his two sons, three daughters and their spouses; 13 grandchildren and spouses; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 735 N. Revere Road, Akron, Ohio. Interment at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park, with military honors by Firestone VFW Post #3383. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. TODAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the LDS Church's Perpetual Education Fund.
