Robert J. Weirath, age 97, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2014 at Akron General Hospital Hospice on Ridgewood Road with his son by his side.
A lifelong resident of Akron, Mr. Weirath was employed by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company for 42 years retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Firestone Federal Credit Union for over 40 years.
Mr. Weirath was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific theater. In his youth, Bob played baseball for a number of Akron City AA Leagues, and in the late 1930's he played on the Boston Red Sox minor league teams. He was inducted into the Greater Akron Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995.
Mr. Weirath was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude and youngest son, James. He is survived by son, Robert (Susan) Weirath Jr.; three grandchildren, Tamara (Kevin) Shelley, Robert P. (Kelli) Weirath, and Wayne (Jill) Weirath along with seven great grandchildren; brother, Harry (Lois) Weirath and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind very dear friend, Christine Raymond.
Visitation will be at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. on Tuesday, May 20 from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be private for immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Summit County Board of Mental Retardation, 89 E. Howe Rd., Tallmadge, OH 44278 (in memory of his son, James).
