Roger R. Haag, 94, passed away July 21, 2013.
Roger graduated from West Tech High School. He was a proud graduate of Case School of Applied Science in 1941 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During the latter part of World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Navy. Roger has been a member of the Cleveland Lutheran Veterans Club since the 1940's. He and Evelyn met through this club and married in 1949. They remained active in the club and enjoyed its many activities.
The family resided in Rocky River from 1959 to 1977 and were members of St. Thomas Lutheran Church. In 1977, they moved to Fairlawn and became members of Fairlawn Lutheran Church.
Roger was vice president of Korner Roofing from 1954 to 1968 and subsequently assumed ownership of Kasch Roofing Co. which he operated through 1986.
Roger was an avid sailor and member of the Cleveland Yacht Club. He was a competitive racer and his Columbia 29 named the Wild Goose won many races. Roger also enjoyed hunting and traveled to Canada including the Northwest Territory. He was a good woodworker and able to fix anything around the house.
He and Evelyn wintered in Cape Coral, FL where they enjoyed fishing, golfing and their membership in the German American Club.
People that knew Roger respected him for his intelligence, work ethic and determination. He had a wonderful sense of humor even during difficult times. He lived his life with integrity, following Christian principles. We are so proud to have called him father and grandfather.
Preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn and parents, Walter and Clara; he will be greatly missed by his son, Thomas ; daughter, Marilyn (Anthony) Menich; grandchildren, Meredith, Matthew and Andrew.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service for all of their help and support. We especially want to thank Mary and Chris who always went above and beyond to provide kind, compassionate and loving care to dad. To them we will always be grateful.
Services will be held 11 a.m. FRIDAY at Fairlawn Lutheran Church, with Pastors Charles Lentner and Larry Leuthaeuser officiating. Burial will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Cleveland. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., THURSDAY from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairlawn Lutheran Church, 3415 West Market St., Fairlawn 44333 or to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service, c/o Akron General Foundation, 400 Wabash Ave., Akron 44307-2463.
