RUSSELL GEORGE MOSES

December 11, 1939 – December 30, 2023

On Friday nights he walked between Mommy (Myrtle Rose Robinson Moses) and Daddy (Lowell B. Moses, Sr.), each small hand secure in a larger and more sturdy one, up Division Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio, to the local bar. His big brothers (Lowell B. Moses, Jr., Warren T. Moses/Minamay Moses, and Harold Moses/Doris Moses) played at home. He drank root beer, sang along to the live Irish music, and felt grown up. “Oh Danny Boy”, the last song of the night, made his daddy and mommy weep and so he wept too, and knew these to be a different kind of tears. His daddy carried him home.

Russell George Moses, 84, deeply loved husband of Louise Eastin Moses; brother-in-law of Earl Irvin Eastin/Kathryn Pike Eastin and Pamela Connolly (deceased)/Leslie Connolly; beloved father of Laurie Ann Moses (deceased), Sharon Lee Moses Vacha, Brett Robinson Moses/Wendi Moses, and Christopher Eastin Moses; grandfather of Alexander Eastin Vacha/Marissa Vacha, Adam Robert Vacha, Andrew Thomas Vacha, Aidan Patrick Vacha, and Emery Nicole Vacha (Sharon Moses Vacha/Robert Frank Vacha) as well as Paizley Skye Sobczyski, India Eastin Moses Hatjes/Joey Hatjes) and Coen Thomas Moses (Brett and Wendi Moses); great-grandfather of Avery Orion Hall (Adam Vacha/Allie Hall), Kennedy Kuchinski and Jace Kuchinski (Paizley Skye Sobczyski/Mike Kuchinski) and Heidi Celene Vacha (Alexander Vacha/Marissa Lauren Vacha); proud uncle of Dana Connolly James, Terry Allen Connolly, Jill Jeanette Eastin Rutledge, Jeffery Earl Eastin, Victoria Mae Eastin Cape, Robert Moses, James Moses, Bonnie Lee McVeigh (deceased), Sandy Lee Moses-Crawford and Christopher Lee Moses, along with numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. We celebrate the life of Violet Rose Moses who was born August 15, 1929 and died barely a year later. She would have been his big sister.

Many remember him as a cook; “Grumpsy-Bread,” as the children called it, is legendary.

A lifelong runner, he finished two marathons and was always competitive in his age group at shorter distances. His love for the Cleveland Indians began when he was old enough to walk to the old Municipal Stadium. He later played left field in both the bar league and the church league, and enjoyed playing catch with his children and grandchildren. He loved any sport with a ball, learned to root for the Bucs without giving up his loyalty to the Browns.

Goodyear paid the bills; photography, which he displayed in fine art shows, more than once winning the ‘best in show’ award, was at his center. He believed, “You get to know a people by observing the environments in which they live.” His search for cityscapes fueled and was fueled by his love of travel.

His faith supported him throughout his life. He played the guitar and led the music ministry for the Good News Prayer and Praise Community in Lincoln, Nebraska, and has been an active member of the Church of the Ascension Episcopal Church in Clearwater, Florida for 20 years

“The summer’s gone and all the roses falling.

It’s you, it’s you must go and we must bide.”

A Memorial Service will be held 2PM WEDNESDAY, May 8 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in the Chapel, 1361 W. Market St. Akron, OH 44313 with the Rev. Mark Pruitt officiating. Private inurnment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
