Ruth Wright Clinefelter

November 2, 1930 — August 12, 2010

Ruth Wright Clinefelter, 79, a lifetime resident of Fairlawn and retired professor with 43 years service at the University of Akron, passed away on August 12, 2010 after a brief but heroic effort to survive a severe illness in the aftermath of heart surgery.

She was best known for her zealous participation in preserving local history. She freely donated her time and energy while serving as an active member and office holder in many of the organizations devoted to historical causes and professionalism. Included are Summit County Historical Society, American Association of University Professors, Progress Through Preservation and others. She was instrumental in publicizing the historical importance of Middlebury Cemetery in what is now East Akron, and was one of the speakers at the special ceremony held there to celebrate Akron's 175th year.

Ruth had made several trips to England and Ireland to research the Keightley branch of her ancestry and compiled the results into a book which she completed this past year. It was well written and she looked forward to having it published sometime soon. At any given time, she had several projects under way and was always delighted when she could triumphantly announce, ``Well, that's done!'

She was an avid collector of miniature antiques and had furnished and decorated several doll houses. Her collecting was diversified and selective, including glass and silver as well as postcards depicting Summit county locations over the last century.

Collaboration with Beacon Journal columnist Russ Mussara and cartoon artist Chuck Ayers lead to the publishing of the book, ``Celebrating Akron in Picture Postcards'. It was brought out in the year 2000, and all proceeds from its sales are donated to the Summit County Historical Society.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and brother, John Wright. Those who remain to mourn their loss are her sister, Nancy Koly Michael; niece, Christine Hlavin Nip; great niece, Grace Morgan Hlavin; a great joy to Ruth, God daughter, Michelle Wietzel; and a host of caring friends and associates from all walks of life.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday at St Paul's Episcopal Church on the corner of Kenilworth/W. Market St.. Reception immediately following. Any remembrances can be made to the Humane Society of Greater Akron or the Historical Society.
