Ruth L. Mahoney, 103, passed away peacefully at home November 18, 2012.
Born in Upper Sandusky, she lived most of her life in Akron. Ruth graduated from White Cross Hospital, now River Side, and received her nursing degree in 1930.
She worked at several local hospitals as an RN and was the head of nursing at various nursing homes. Ruth was active in making lab robes for the veteran's hospital in Brecksville and also made mittens and hats for the children of the Indian Reservation in South Dakota. She was the Past President of Federation Alumnus and was active in Evergreens, Forever Young, Copley Seniors and Fairlawn AARP.
Preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; son, Patrick; brothers, Franklin and Gerald Gottfried; sister, Norma Jackson; survived by her daughter and best friend, Carol Mahoney; sister-in-law, Kathryn Gottfried; nephew, Rev. Michael (Karen) Mahoney; nieces, Kris (Greg) Hickey and their daughters, Jordan and Alex; Shannon (Craig) Brown, Margaret (Roland) Jackson and their daughter, Elizabeth; and many other loving relatives and friends.
A very special thanks to her close companion and home health aide for the past five years, Patty Tuttle.
Service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron with Rev. Michael Mahoney officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. TODAY at the funeral home.
