She was born December 31, 1925, in Omaha, Neb., the youngest child of Clyde Ulric and Ann Catherine Struphaith Mickel. She attended parochial schools through the eighth grade and graduated from Omaha's renowned Central High School.
She worked briefly in Omaha before marrying Bob Wilcox, a returning Air Force veteran, on December 21, 1945. The two met playing golf. The couple resided in Nebraska Omaha, Lincoln, and Omaha again while Bob worked for the B.F. Goodrich Company and Sally raised the family. They were transferred to the Chicago area and enjoyed four years in Hinsdale, Ill., before moving to Akron in 1963.
She worked at Molly McIntyre's and at Little Angels, and volunteered with Meals on Wheels and in the office of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Her principal role was mother and homemaker. She took great pride in her home, was a fine cook, and an excellent baker. She was tremendously proud of each of her four children and relished the progress and accomplishments of her grandchildren. She enjoyed backyard bird watching and was an avid reader, particularly of political biography.
