Sam H. Bell died December 23, 2010. He would have been 85 years of age this New Year's Eve.
The only son of Marie Williams Bell and Samuel H. Bell was born in Rochester, N.Y. on a snowy New Year's Eve. A short time later, the family moved to Akron.
Always intelligent and even handed in his approach, as an attorney, a prosecutor, and a state and federal judge, Judge Bell treated those with whom he dealt with fairness and respect. And he listened, intently. Watching his mind work was like watching the facets of a turning crystal.
No man could have been better to his family. His wit, his love of sports and Notre Dame and his capacity for understanding humanity enhanced his strength and character.
He relished being with his wife, Jennie, outdoors fly fishing, hiking, bicycling and always, always walking to talk and to think.
Preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Joyce Shaw Bell, the mother of his two sons; he is survived by his wife, Jennie; son, Henry W. and wife, Mary, of Schaumburg, Ill.; their children, Mary Kate, Sam, Andrew and Jack; son, Steven D. of Bath and his children, Colleen Joyce and Patrick. Judge Bell will be greatly missed by the Steven H. Mault family of Portsmouth, Ohio, especially Will, Corissa and Darren.
At his request, services will be private and only for the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Bell Lectureship at the College of Wooster or to Pawsibilities, The Humane Society of Greater Akron.
May God bless Sam in Heaven as Sam's presence blessed so many of us here on Earth.
