Sharon Eileen Wood (Lockart)
Sharon passed away peacefully at home on January 21, 2017, after a courageous struggle with COPD. She was born in Albany, NY on September 27, 1943. As a young child she and her mother returned to Ohio where she was raised. Sharon was preceded in death by her mother, Ada Mendenhall, her loving Aunt Alyce and Uncle Bill Lockart and her in-laws, William and Lenore Wood.
She is survived, and will be deeply missed by her loving husband of 52 years, Bill Wood; daughter and son "in-law," Eileen and Rob Kerr; grandchildren and her rays of sunshine - Kelly and Noah; sister in-law, Cheryl Zito (John); niece, Erika Scott (Michael); great nephew and niece, Cameron and Mia; nephew, John Zito (Michelle) and Julianna; as well as her loving family in New York and Ohio.
Sharon was an avid reader and daily cross-word solver. She loved to learn and she loved to teach. She attended Buchtel High School and Kent State University where she graduated with both a History and English major. She was an English teacher in Arlington, VA and at Perkins Middle School in Akron. She later became a home instructor with the Akron Public Schools and she taught at Akron Children's Hospital. She went on to teach the RSVP program for Akron Pregnancy Services and finished her career as a substitute teacher in Akron. She loved to be with the students and she believed that every student had a thirst for knowledge and learning.
Sharon also volunteered countless hours to Stan Hywet, especially to Ohio Mart; Fairlawn Lutheran Church and all of the schools that her daughter attended.
Sharon was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and would never miss a band concert or sporting event that they were part of. She loved to be with them and to watch them grow and learn. She was a mother, a Mammy, a wife, a teacher, a reader, an artist, a friend and a conveyer of the truth. She touched so many lives and taught us all how to be genuine, accepting and how to love unconditionally.
The family will have calling hours at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., on Thursday from 5-7 p.m. and a memorial service will take place at Fairlawn Lutheran Church on Friday at 11 a.m. Donations in Sharon's name may be made to Fairlawn Lutheran Church, 3415 W. Market St., Akron, OH 44333 or to the COPD Foundation, 3300 Ponce De Leon Blvd, Miami, FL 33134 (
