Stanley 'Dave' David Garthoff

January 19, 1933 — April 21, 2022

Stanley David Garthoff ‘Dave’ passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 89 years old April 21, 2022. Although he became ill in recent months, Dave never lost his cheerful spirit that so many loved him for. Dave was born January 19, 1933, in Davenport, Iowa and grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He obtained his BS in Industrial Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1953 where he also played trombone in the Highty-Tighties. Dave remained a very loyal Hokie fan throughout his life. Following college graduation, Dave married Dottie while serving in the US Army and working at the Pentagon. Upon release from military service, Dave and Dottie relocated to Akron, Ohio where he began his career at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and had two sons, Russ and Loren. While working at Goodyear, Dave earned an MBA from the University of Akron in 1963. That same year, Dave qualified as a Registered Professional Engineer. Following a successful 42-year career at Goodyear where he retired from his position as Information Services Administrator in 1995, Dave began a second career teaching economics at the University of Akron. After his first wife’s passing, Dave met Donna Wade who he married in the spring of 2009. Over the past 13 years Dave enjoyed a relaxing life of retirement with Donna. They had a wonderful time vacationing in their Florida home and making many trips to visit family. Dave was a member of the Akron Power Squadron, VFW Post 4738, and Elks Lodge 1923 where he and Donna had many meaningful friendships and cherished memories.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Margaret Garthoff, and first wife Dorothy Garthoff.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Donna Wade-Garthoff; brothers Raymond (Vera), and Doug (Paulette) Garthoff; sons Russell and Loren Garthoff; stepsons Jeff, Clay (Julie), Charley (Kathi), and John (Michelle) Wade; grandchildren Adrianne, Brian, and Brandon Garthoff, Sarah (Toby) White, Daniel (Amanda) Wade, Brittany (Ryan) Gibson, Elizabeth (Joe) Terry, Ben Wade, and Amanda Wade; great grandchildren Nolan Gibson, Oaklyn and Finley White; as well as other family members and friends. The family would like to give Dottie Payne a special thank you for all of her help, love and support.

Dave will be dearly missed by his wife and family. Dave was a loving man whose positivity was contagious. He was also very intelligent, and his children and grandchildren will miss hearing his life experiences and learning from him. His family can have peace knowing he is home with the Lord and no longer suffering.
