Stephen H. Laning, Ph.D., 95, died September 15, 2014.
Born in Colonie (Albany), New York, October 18, 1918, to Henry Julius Laning and Maybelle Grounds Laning, he had resided in Akron since 1946. He graduated from Union College, Schenectady, New York, in 1941, and earned his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 1947. He was a member of the Society of the Sigma Xi. His research involved x-ray diffraction and x-ray spectrography in the analysis of glass. At his retirement he was Research Supervisor and Senior Research Chemist for PPG Industrial Chemical Division in Barberton, Ohio.
A member of First Presbyterian Church since 1946, he was a Ruling Elder and had been Clerk of the Session. He served on various committees for Eastminster Presbytery, and for over 30 years was Treasurer of the Akron Area Association of Churches.
Preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie M. Laning, in 2010; and his son, Malcolm H. Laning, in 2014; Dr. Laning is survived by his daughter, Barbara L. Fitzpatrick; and his grandchildren, Jeremy M. Laning, Tracie K. Laning, and Stephen F. Fitzpatrick.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. FRIDAY at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., with Dr. Mark T. Ruppert officiating. Inurnment in Santa Claus, Indiana. There are no calling hours.
