Stylianos Steve C Manolis

September 13, 1934 — January 16, 2010

Stylianos Steve C. Manolis passed away on January 16, 2010 at the age of 75, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was a loving father and grandfather and a hard worker who fully lived both the difficult and joyful moments of his life.

He was born in Ikaria, Greece in 1934 to a large, loving family. Although he grew up during a time of depression and war and lost his father at an early age, he often recounted happy memories of life in his home village of Manganitis.

He graduated from high school and technical school in Agios Kirikos, Ikaria and served in the merchant marines. He traveled the world, and eventually came to the U.S. in 1962, staying with his cousins George and Ann Manolis in Detroit, who helped him start a life here and introduced him to his wife, Joyce Chibis. They were married in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Akron on July 4, 1964 and had two children.

During Steve's early years in the U.S., he opened the Olympia Restaurant with his wife, Joyce, and later, the Burger Queen with his brother, Elias. He then worked as a painting contractor for the remainder of his life, continuing to take on jobs even after his retirement. He was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Akron, the Order of AHEPA and the Pan-Icarian Brotherhood. During his nearly 50 years in Akron, he enjoyed an active social life with a large circle of family and close friends. He loved to garden, play backgammon, and spend time with his children and grandchildren. He regularly attended AHEPA functions and the annual Pan-Icarian Conventions, where he reconnected with friends from his youth. After his retirement, he looked forward to his annual trip to Ikaria and dreamt of moving there permanently.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents, Chrysostomos and Ioanna, and two brothers, Stamati and Elias. He is survived by his daughters, Argie and Jo Ann; son-in-law, Patrick; grandchildren, Konstandino Stylianos and Lisa Ruth Efthemia; brothers, George, Foti, and Aleko; sisters-in-law, Eugenia, Mary, and Theodora; dear friend, Maria; and many beloved nieces, nephews, Godchildren and their families.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S. Union St., Akron 44304, with Rev. Fr. Jerry F. Hall officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagios service to be held at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Icaros Scholarship Fund, which was established in memory of Steve's wife Joyce and provides educational opportunities for Greek American youth.
