Sue was born in Akron, Ohio to Hazel Emily Wilson and Clarence Emerson Snyder. She attended Akron schools and graduated from Buchtel High School. A
graduate of the University of Akron, she was a member of Delta Gamma
Sorority, Pierian (an Activities Honorary later known as Mortar Board), Phi
Sigma Alpha (Academic Honorary), and Kappa Delta Pi (Education
Honorary). She received an A Key for her student activities, worked as an
Ohio Bell operator and was an accountant for her uncle's dairy farm.
On November 7, 1942 Sue married Steven Malcolm (Mal) Ames and
they had 71 wonderful years together. Their union was blessed with 5 children. She
became a member of Witan where she learned the joy of volunteering.
Her memberships also included Trinity Lutheran Church and Greenleaf
Family Services (formerly Family Services of Summit County) where she
volunteered for over 40 years and became a member of their Board of
Trustees. She was also a member of Chapter AJ of P.E.O., Backyard
Garden Club, and University of Akron's Women's Committee. She was a
wonderful wife and mother and always the consummate organizer.
Sue was predeceased by her parents; her son, Steven Philip; and her
brother, Col. (Ret.) Philip E. Snyder. She is survived by her husband, Mal;
daughter, Priscilla "Cissy" (Gregory) Wismar and her children Eric (Miharu),
Sarah (Mark), Elizabeth (Hugo) and Jessica (Kelly Burger); son, Laurence
(Joy) and his children Ruth (Ted), William (Charlotte) and Paul; son, Philip
(Marjorie "Sis") and his children Steven (Wendy), Lars (Colleen) and
Michael; son, David and his children Christopher, Nicole and Alyssa. Sue
also leaves 21 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 17 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. David L. Nevergall officiating. Private inurnment at Glendale Cemetery.
