Susan Maryan Grant

August 13, 1944 — April 3, 2025

Akron

Susan Maryan Grant, aged 80 years, of Akron OH, passed into Christ’s arms early April 3rd, 2025, at Akron General Hospice after an 8-year battle with breast cancer. She was supported during her last day by her family, friends and St Paul’s pastors.

Susan was born in Liverpool, UK, on August 13th, 1944, to Edna & Bert Hallwood, and enjoyed an extended family. She attended Aigburth Vale HS for Girls, Liverpool Art School, and All Hallows CofE church before attending the University of Southhampton’s Winchester Training College where she was a member of the college tennis team. After College, Sue taught at elementary schools in Liverpool, Cheshire and Hampshire.

Sue married high school friend Andrew Grant at St Mary’s Ashton Hayes near Chester in August 1967 and honeymooned on a tour of Scotland. Successive jobs took them to Hampshire and to Sussex, before moving to Pittsburgh at Thanksgiving, 1972, with Andrew and their son James. Richard and Katherine were born to Sue in Pittsburgh.

The family moved to Lynchburg Virginia for a couple of years before relocating to Akron in 1982, where they joined St Paul’s church and Sue enjoyed running madrigal dinners to support the choirs, led the Episcopal Church Women, and enjoyed arranging flowers for both St Paul’s and for Stan Hywet. She was the first recipient of St Pauls’ Spirit of St Paul’s award for service and leadership. Sue was president of a PEO chapter, and also of a Beta Sigma Phi chapter, both of which she greatly enjoyed. Her only grandson, Owein, lives in Akron and gave Sue great pleasure.

Sue learned to ride in Liverpool, and in Akron, she and Kate enjoyed their horses, Romeo, Sefton, Fritz, Stacci and Manny. She loved riding, her barn family and cheering Kate on at shows. She also loved caring for her many dogs, having had five at once, and her current rescue lab, Toby. Susan also enjoyed watercolor painting and classical music.

Susan was preceded in death by her father and then her mother, who often visited her in Akron, and by her aunts and uncles.

She is survived by her husband, Andrew; children, James (Mary) Grant, Ric (Diana) Grant, and Kate Grant; and grandson, Owein; and beloved friends of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; and her PEO Sisterhood and Beta Sigma Phi.
