Ted A. Mallo

February 13, 1945 — October 9, 2022

Ted A. Mallo , age 77, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 9, 2022.  His wife and three children were with him by his bedside.

Ted dedicated his life to his family and education.  Ted loved his time with his family and spent numerous vacations with them in Gatlinburg, Disney World, and at the beach. Whether hosting grandchildren over the summer or the entire family for Christmas, Ted was a constant source of love and support.  Many memories were made enjoying life’s simple pleasures, eating, drinking, playing cards, laughing and spending time together.

He spent his early years traveling back and forth from Akron to Tennessee, where he started his education in a two-room schoolhouse and helped work his grandmother’s farm.  He was a proud graduate of Akron South High School and recently hosted their 60th class reunion.  He taught biology, chemistry and physics in Akron public schools prior to joining The University of Akron.  Ted served twelve years as an elected Green Local School Board member.

Ted was the former Vice President and General Counsel at The University of Akron, where he earned his undergraduate, graduate and Juris Doctor degrees.  He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law from The University of Akron in 2019.  During his 48 years employed by The University of Akron, he spent 40 years as its chief legal officer and had the privilege of serving with eight UA presidents, eight Ohio attorneys general and numerous boards of trustees.  With the utmost professional ethics and integrity, he was very proud and honored to serve his one client, The University of Akron.  Ted was dedicated to the UA community and truly appreciated the close friendships and support of so many colleagues throughout his career.  He was a hard worker, focused on UA success, while never forgetting to make time for laughter and fun with his UA family.

UA held a special place for Ted, he loved the Zips.  His university family of faculty, staff, students and alumni had a literal as well as metaphorical meaning.  He met his future wife, JoAnn, while both were UA undergraduates.  All three of his children, his sisters, and numerous other relatives graduated from UA.  While at UA, Ted was a brother of Phi Delta Theta, executive editor of the student run newspaper, Akron Buchtelite, and varsity swimmer.  He was a true believer in the old UA motto, “wherever you want to go, you can get there from The University of Akron”.  When Ted worked at UA, he was often on campus in evenings and weekends, typically wearing one of his countless UA shirts. His children were raised believing it was normal to spend weekends on the UA campus playing dodgeball in Summit Lounge, wandering the Student Center, or chasing their dog Pepper up and down the winding stairs inside Buchtel Hall.

Ted is survived by his wife of 55 years, JoAnn; his three children, Ted (Jennifer) Mallo of Maryland, Tim (Karen) Mallo of North Carolina and Robin (Jim) DePew of Green, Ohio; grandchildren, Talia, Alicia, Tim, Katherine, Lauren, Sophia, Grace, Andrew and Sarah; sisters, Helen (Fritz) Gisewhite of Akron and Jackie (John) Farkas of California; brothers-in-law, Bob (Gia) Batchik of California, Jonathan Batchik (Vanessa Henderson) of New Mexico, Tom (Diane) Batchik of Maryland; sister-in-law, Vicki (Jessie) Owens; nieces and nephews, Fritz, Marc (Kristine), Heather Gisewhite; John and David (Brittany) Farkas; J.D. and Jimmy Batchik; Joseph Owens and special cousin, Sibyl Myatt.  Ted was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Grace Mallo.
