Thomas R. Merryweather
Tom was born in Akron, Ohio the oldest son of Dorothy and Clyde. He was a 5th generation Akronite with deep roots in the Highland Square neighborhood. His great grandfather farmed on land which later became a midrise Apartment building which Tom managed. His grandfather built houses in Highland Square and he and his father owned another apartment block built there in 1927.
He graduated from Buchtel High and Cornell University. After Cornell, he joined the Marine Corps, serving in Okinawa and then in California, where he met his wife Marilyn who happened to also be a Cornell graduate. He worked in mortgage banking during those years and their two oldest children Melissa and Tim were born there before they moved back to Akron.
In Akron, he worked for First Federal Savings as mortgage department manager for 17 years, and had two more children; Betsy and Greg.
After leaving First Federal he spent the rest of his professional career in the real estate business as a property manager and real estate developer except for one year when he served as Executive Director of Old Trail School.
Always interested in the community at large, he served Akron as a volunteer on numerous commissions and boards and remained until his death a Life Trustee of the Akron Art Museum, Old Trail School and the Akron Child Guidance Center.
He led a balanced life, always leaving time for family, friends and sport. He hiked and biked thousands of miles, skied some of the best slopes and fished great rivers and streams. Tennis was his most enduring sport which he played into his 80s. He also cherished the time he spent with his friends, many of whom he had been close to for many decades.
Preceded by his wife Marilyn in 2018 and grandson Lucian in 2013, he leaves behind his four children, Melissa Merryweather, Tim Merryweather (Denise), Betsy Stuyvesant (Nate), Greg Merryweather (Anna); grandchildren, Ryan Merryweather (Aline), Amanda Robbins (Jeff), Ted and Henry Stuyvesant, Theo Merryweather and great-granddaughter, Ivy. He also leaves behind his special companion Anne DeBoalt. The family wishes to thank Nine Jones and Josh Singer for taking such good care of Tom during his last year.
