Thomas F. O'Brien, 87, died at Akron City Hospital on July 31, 2008.

He was born to Hazel and Thomas O'Brien in Quincy, Massachusetts on December 12, 1920. He was educated in the Boston Public Schools and graduated from Northeastern University in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.

Thomas worked for Firestone Tire and Rubber Company as a Chemical Engineer for 42 years. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for over 50 years. As a member of the AIChE, he served a term as Chairman of the Akron Section. After retirement, he was an advisor for small business owners and provided tax counseling through the Service Corps of Retired Executives Association. He was actively involved with SCORE for over 15 years.

Thomas was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Eileen; and is survived by children, Barbara McIntire James of Birmingham, Mich., Deborah Morin Patrick of Bratenahl, Ohio, Jennifer Masters John of Lake Forest, ILL., and David of Akron. He was the proud grandfather of Alison, Thomas, Sarah, Hillary, and Carolyn and great-grandfather of Isabel Marie.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Monday, August 4, 2008, 9:30 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Avenue, Akron, Ohio 44320. Private family burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call TODAY, 3 to 5 p.m. at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron 44333. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Women's Board of Summa Health System Nursing Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

The O'Brien family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Akron City Hospital for the loving care that they provided to both of our parents in the past seven weeks.
