Thomas Charles Powers
, 61, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on June 20th 2023 in Akron after a brief illness.
Tom was born October 20, 1961, in Cheektowaga, New York to Sherman D. Powers and Mary Charlene (Powers) Huber.
In 1965, the family moved to Oil City, Pennsylvania where he spent most of his childhood and graduated from Oil City High School in 1980. While in high school he was active in sports and was on the wrestling and football teams. After graduating from high school, Tom served in the U.S. Army in Germany, where he was a motor transport operator. After returning home to Oil City, Tom was active with several local socialization centers and was employed by Venango Training and Development Center. Additionally, he served as a driver for The Pointe.
He was a member of Medina Presbyterian Church in Medina, OH. Previously he was a member of Oil City First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon.
Growing up, Tom enjoyed spending his summers at the family farm in Michigan with his grandfather and brother. Tom is remembered as a kind and gentle soul with a huge heart. He was always noted as the best Christmas present giver. His life centered around his family, and he was much loved. Tom departs us never having had an enemy. His friends and family will remember his generous bear hugs. He was an avid music lover and served as a DJ for many years. He always lent a helping hand to neighbors, friends, and strangers.
He faced his life-long mental health challenges with optimism and was dedicated to following his treatment.
He will be greatly missed by his mother, Mary Charlene Huber, of Oil City, PA, his sister, Patricia (Daniel) Feroz also of Oil City, PA, his brother, William (Patricia) Powers of Parker, PA, his sister Catharine (Rebecca Coste) Powers of Akron, OH, his stepsister Jeanne (Harry) Wilkens of Tabor, IA, his stepbrother Michael (Heidi) Huber of Leesburg, VA, and his kiwi brother Scott (Sue) Bell of New Zealand. He is fondly remembered by his nephews David (Ryuta) Feroz of Brambleton, VA, Michael (Elena) Feroz of Washington, DC, Andrew (Krystyna) Van Grubb of Albuquerque, NM and nieces Emily Powers of Cleveland, OH and Maya Kerr Coste of Akron, OH and nephews Charles Wilkens, and Timothy Wilkens, both of Omaha, NE. He will also be missed by his many cousins, friends, and his special cat, Pepper.
He was preceded in death by his father Sherman, stepfather Charles Huber, and infant brother, Dale David Powers.
We would like to thank the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Veteran’s Health Administration for their years of skilled and compassionate care of Tom.
There will be a private family service at a later date.
