Thomas M. Schlueter, M.D., FACS

Tom, 83, passed away Dec 6, 2014.

He was born 12/17/30 in Akron, OH to Dr. Simon and Marian Schlueter. He graduated from Buchtel High School, Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati Medical School. Dr. Schlueter fulfilled his military obligations as a flight surgeon with the U.S. Navy. He was attached to the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 3 at the Naval bases in Pensacola, FL and Norfolk, VA and served aboard the aircraft carriers Boxer and Valley Forge. He received his flight wings 12/17/59 and completed his naval service with honor in 1962 as a Lieutenant Commander. He then completed his surgical residency at Akron City Hospital.

During his career as a General Surgeon, beginning in 1967, he was a member of the American Medical Association, Ohio State Medical Association, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Ohio Chapter American College of Surgeons, Summit County Medical Society, Surgical staff of Akron City Hospital/Summa, Medical Director Summa Health Systems, Courtesy Surgical staffs of Akron Children's Hospital and Akron General Medical Center, Associate Professor of Surgery N.E.O.U.C.O.M, and Medical Director of General Tire and Rubber Company for 25 years.

Retiring in 1995 gave him the leisure time to continue his passions of bicycle touring and model railroading. During his lifetime he bicycled 222,673 miles and reached his goal of completing the distance to the moon and beyond.

Preceded in death by his parents and son, Eric (Patrice); he is survived by his wife of 57 years, Barbara (nee Wheatley), daughter, Amy Sarvis (Tom) of Akron; sons, Kevin (Cindy) of New Carlisle, OH, and Sam (Nancy) of Folsom, CA; his sisters, Marianne Watson and Suzanne Haupt; grandchildren, Tom, Alan, Anna, Kyle, Andrew, Lauren; most darling great granddaughter, Ava; and many loved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Particular mention of thanks goes to the R.O.M.E.O. circle of bicycling friends of many years. The family wishes to thank all the staff at the Akron City Hospital campus of Summa Health System, who passionately cared for Tom during his final days.

Cremation has taken place. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Dec 17, 2014, 2-6 pm, at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. At 6 pm there will be will a celebration of Tom's life with loving words from family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, 1403 West Hines Hill Rd, Peninsula, OH 44264; the Summa Health System Foundation for Surgical Residency Education, 525 East Market Street, Akron, OH; or a charity of your choice.
