Thomas Denis VanDoros, 92, passed away peacefully Monday, May 17, 2010 surrounded by his beloved wife, Penny and daughters, Christine, Priscilla, and Pam. Tom was the son of Denis and Panagiota VanDoros and the brother of Bill VanDoros Diana, Mary D'Avello Faust, and Nick VanDoros Lucille.
Tom's greatest joy in life was his wife and family. He was a kind and gentle man whose love and compassion touched all who had the honor of knowing him.
Tom graduated from Central High School and attended The University of Akron and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Tom married the love of his life, Pamela 'Penny' Alogdelis in 1943. He served with the United States Army, 78th Infantry Division, as an engineer in World War II from 1943-1945 and received three bronze stars.
Tom retired from General Tire and Rubber Company in 1982 as the Chief Plant Engineer after 42 years of service. He was a resident of Fairlawn, Ohio for over 50 years and served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for 20 years and helped incorporate the area from a village to a city.
Tom leaves his most beloved wife of 67 years, Penny and three lovely daughters, Christine Amitrano Sergio of Albany, N.Y., Priscilla Turgon Bob of Perryville, Md., and Pam Angheld Rick of Fairlawn; along with eight grandchildren, Matthew Kost Janel, Jocelyn Kost deceased, Nicole Ehrie Matthew, Christopher Amitrano, Jessica Turgon Babalitis James, Sarah Hughes Colin, Katie Angheld, Rachel Natoli Chase and six great-grandchildren, Ryan and Hayley Kost, Jason and Michael Babalitis, Liam Hughes, Grace Ehrie and several nieces and nephews.
Tom had been a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church his entire life and served as President of the church board in 1958. He was instrumental in establishing the annual bazaar which is now known as the annual Greek Festival. Tom was a member of the American Hellenic Progressive Association AHEPA for over 50 years.
Funeral services will be held 12 noon SATURDAY, May 22 at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church with Rev. Father Jerry Hall officiating. Interment at Rose Hill Burial Park where Copley Fairlawn VFW post and the U.S. Army will conduct military honors. The viewing will be held 4 to 7 p.m. FRIDAY, May 21 at Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., where Trisagios services will be held at 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kathy Bahas Memorial Scholarship Fund c/o Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 129 S.
