V. Elizabeth "Libby" Monroe
Elizabeth "Libby" died at the age of 93 on January 4, 2014 in comfort of her home -- as she wanted.
She was born in West Medford, Mass., on December 30, 1920. She was the youngest of four children, and graduated from Medford High School in 1938. She later graduated from the Faulkner Hospital Nursing Program (in Boston) in 1942. Libby met her husband, Robert W. Monroe, when she worked as a waitress at a hotel on Lake Sunapee, N.H. She was a nursing student and Robert was in medical school when they met -- it was a summer job for both. They were married in 1942.
After World War II, where Robert served as a doctor, they moved to Philadelphia. That was where Robert finished his residency in Pediatrics. They then moved to Greenville, Pa., where Robert practiced at a clinic. They lived in Greenville from 1948-81. They adopted two girls -- Vicky and Roberta. Libby was active in church, volunteered with organizations such as the Greenville Symphony, the Girl Scouts, the local hospital and the March of Dimes. She was a superb cook, enjoyed bowling, golf, gardening and knitting.
In 1981, Robert and Libby retired to Seven Lakes, N.C. They were active in the local community. Robert died in July of 2001. They were married for 58 years.
Libby remained in Seven Lakes until 2009, when she moved to Concordia at Sumner in Copley, Ohio. She enjoyed making new friends and being close to her daughter, Roberta, who lives in Akron. Her daughter, Vicky, often visited from Forestville, N.Y.
Besides her parents, Trixy H. and C. Donald MacCormack, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Georgie A. Gurney, H. Miriam Barbour, and her brother, Charles D. MacCormack. She also was preceded by her nephew, James A. Gurney and her niece, Christine MacCormack. She is loved and missed by her daughters, Vicky B. Novak Parisio and Roberta E. Pluto; and also by her two son-in-laws, Jim Parisio and Terry Pluto; by her two grandchildren, Robert A. Novak and Heather M. Novak; many other relatives and friends, and especially the new ones she made at Concordia at Sumner in Copley during the last four years of her life.
On Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 10 a.m., a memorial service will be held at Concordia at Sumner in Copley for the residents of the complex. Funeral and internment will be held at a later date in Seven Lakes, N.C.
