Vera Marie Doering
Vera Marie Doering died at home with family Sept. 24 2012. On a beautiful warm evening, just about sunset, her 92 years on earth came to a peaceful end.
She started her life as Vera Marie Brogan, May 16 1920. She was raised on Diagonal Road in Akron with her sister Jean, her parents, and her grandparents whom she adored. Vera graduated Buchtel High School in 1938, attended business college, and had various jobs along the way. It was during the time she worked at Goodyear Aircraft Corp. that she was recruited into the WAAC. She was the first woman to join from Goodyear Aircraft. She served stateside initially and then as a master sergeant she saw duty in the South Pacific. She was with the HQ of General MacArthur and was among the first of the WAC to reach Manila. Vera returned to Akron and in 1946 she married her high school sweetheart Bill Doering, also an Army veteran. They raised 4 kids; Susie, Jane, Annie and Eddie. They generously gave of their time, energy and love to 11 grandchildren. Presently the family enjoys 7 great grandchildren.
Vera was active in churches, sewing groups, and her neighborhoods. She was an accomplished seamstress, with quilting and needlepoint as her expertise. She worked at Bisson's, and she was a volunteer at St. Thomas Hospital. Bill and Vera travelled throughout their years. NYC was a favorite as was Florence Italy. Their most sentimental journeys were the lifelong trips to Ocean City, New Jersey. Bill died in 2005; Vera had lived with Susie and George in San Antonio TX since 2007.
Vera represents many of her generation who struggled bravely through a Depression, fought and won a World War, raised children with the lessons that life had taught them. Sharing with others, gratitude and respect for life, to never give up or give in, are part of their legacy.
Our family is grateful to the High Street Christian Church members for their loyalty, as well as the Wiandt and Liebert families for a lifetime of friendship. We thank Billow's for meeting our needs with kindness and care. Plans for a family memorial out of town are pending.
Rest in a heavenly place has been given to Vera after her years of giving to others. The lives of Bill and Vera will long be cherished by those of us whom they loved. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
