Victor A. Owoc, 90, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 20, 2014. He was an Akron area resident since 1960, born and raised in New Castle, PA, previously residing in Cleveland, Ohio and Garden City, NY.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife of 66 years, Claire, he was the cherished and devoted father of Kathryn (Phillip) Arnold of Huntington Beach, CA, Diane (Ernest) Kish of Aurora, OH, Richard (Karen) Owoc of San Ramon, CA, and Kimberly (Matthew) Pollard of Bath, OH; adored and treasured Pop-Pop of Melanie Arnold, Kathryn (David) Roberts, James (Molly) Kish, Garrett and Cameron Owoc, Emily (Matthew) Martino, Thomas and Christopher Pollard; precious Great Pop-Pop to Claire and Bennett Roberts and Kelsey Kish; blessings for which he gave thanks always. His family was blessed in return to have the unconditional love of this highly intelligent, successful, admired and respected man. He was the dear brother of Regina (Owoc) Banko and wonderful uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A veteran of World War II, he served as a 1st Lieutenant and squadron bombardier with the 15th Army Air Force, 484th Bomb Group, 846th Squadron, flying out of Italy.
Victor graduated from Alliance (PA) College, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Science Degree in Physics from John Carroll University and completed the Columbia University Executive Management Program. He received an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Alliance (PA) College.
He was employed by Ohio Edison from 1960 to 1989, retiring as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He was a member of its Board of Directors as well as its subsidiary, Pennsylvania Power Company. He served the electric utility industry through the Edison Electric Institute providing his expertise while on its accounting and finance committees. Before coming to Akron he was employed by Gilbert Associates Consultants (1952-1960) in New York City and began his career with Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in January, 1948.
Victor was active in community affairs serving for over thirty years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Summit County Chapter of American Red Cross, including three years as Board Chairman. He also served on the Boards of Summit County United Way, Alliance (PA) College and Bank One, Akron.
He was a member of Fairlawn Country Club and the former Cascade Club serving on both Boards of Directors and two years as Chairman of the Cascade Club.
Vic was an avid golfer, playing many of the world's greatest courses in the United States, Ireland and Scotland. He experienced many highlights and unusual thrills including three holes- in- one, a life- low handicap of 7 at age 67, and a score of 75 at Scotland's St. Andrews Old Course. He even "beat his age" scoring a 76 at age 78.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, August 30, at 9:45 a.m., at St. Hilary Catholic Church, 2750 W. Market St., Fairlawn, OH. The family will receive friends at a brunch reception following the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service /Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center, 3358 Ridgewood Road, Akron, OH 44333; the H. Peter Burg Fund at Akron Community Foundation, 345 W. Cedar St, Akron, OH 44307; or the American Red Cross, Summit County Chapter, 501 W. Market St, Akron, OH 44303.
