VIRGINIA MARIE POWERS (nee Kelsey), age 92, died on April 29th, 2014 in Petoskey, Michigan.
The daughter of Ray and Ruth Kelsey, she was born on December 25th, 1921 in Kenmore, Ohio. She attended Seiberling Elementary School and East High School and earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Akron. She completed additional course work at Ohio State, Oakland, and Michigan State Universities.
Virginia described herself as daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher, Congregationalist, Republican, and a member of: the DAR, the First Families of Ohio, and the Phi Mu Sorority.
Virginia married her husband Thomas A. Powers in 1944. Her initial teaching employment included high school English, Physical Education, and Home Economics in Summit County, Ohio, before their two sons, Tom Jr. and Tim were later born in Columbus.
After a move to Michigan in 1960, Virginia returned to teaching at Berkley High School for 19 years, retiring with her husband, who was also in education, in 1979. She and Tom enjoyed 61 years of marriage and 26 years of retirement before his death in 2005. They were heavily involved in their respective family's genealogy, travelling, reading, golfing, and generally appreciating life.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom, son Tim, sisters Jeanne and Glenna, and brother Bob. She is survived by her son Tom Jr. (Terrie), daughter-in-law Connie, grandchildren Carrie, Cayce, Steven, great grandchildren Ellie and McKinley and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., at 1:00PM; friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
