Virginia Brown Sperry
Virginia Brown Sperry died on October 26, 2014, at the age of 88.
She was born in Akron on November 27, 1925 to Robert A. and Doris Sperry. She attended Buchtel High School and graduated from Old Trail School. She obtained her bachelor's degree from Smith College and master's in education from Kent State University.
Her career in education included ten years at Old Trail School, she taught Spanish speaking and American Indian children in Morenci, AZ; she taught in Los Altos, CA, Beechwood Village, OH, Kent State University School and for 19 years in the Akron Public School System as both teacher and principal.
Ginnie was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary Education Sorority, honorary member of the State P.T.A., and had received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Old Trail School. A member of the Junior League of Akron, she was an active community volunteer. She spent summers at her family home at Wah Wash Kesh Lake in Ontario, Canada and had served ten years on the board of the Wah Wash Kesh Conservation Society.
Preceded in death by her parents; she is survived by her sisters, Anne A. Sperry of Akron and Roberta Schweiger of Denver; nieces, Katie (Carsten) Sorensen, Christy (Bryan) Buckingham and Beth (Brian) Hutchinson; great-nieces and great-nephews, Maddie, Gia and Nick Sorensen, Ivis and Kaiya Buckingham and Jacob Hutchinson.
A memorial service to celebrate Ginnie's life will be announced. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice Care Center, Old Trail School or the Akron Canton Food Bank. (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel)
