William K Barnes

October 21, 1926 — December 26, 2010

William K. Barnes passed away December 26, 2010 at Summa's Palliative Care Center after a brief illness.

Bill was born October 21, 1926 to Keith and Marjorie Barnes in Akron, Ohio. A lifelong resident of Akron, Bill graduated from Buchtel High School, Class of 1945 and Ohio State University, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He married his sweetheart, Jo Anne Myers on February 17, 1950. Duty called and Bill served in the Korean Conflict for two years. Upon his return to the States, Bill resumed working for Roadway Express, retiring with forty years of service.

Bill was devoted to his family. He coached his sons' youth teams and never missed their games in high school. He proudly attended his granddaughters' events. He and Jo travelled extensively in their motor home throughout their married life.

Service to others was important to Bill. He proudly served as a Deacon and an Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he also enjoyed singing in the choir. He volunteered for many years with Good Neighbors of Akron and the Red Cross Bloodmobile, long into retirement. He helped anyone in need.

For those who knew Bill, he told countless stories of his days at OSU and in Korea, thus prompting his family to say ``we heard that story before, Bill.' He would remain undaunted and launch into yet another story. Bill never met a stranger and could carry on a conversation with anyone. An Ohio State enthusiast, Bill followed the football team with passion and decorated various rooms in his house with Buckeye memorabilia.

Preceded in death by his son, David K. Barnes on May 26, 2010, and his brother, J. Robert Barnes, Bill is survived by his wife, Jo; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Pookie; daughter-in-law, Mary; adoring granddaughters, Nichole, Brittany, Lauren and Lynn; and sister-in-law, Carole Barnes.

A special thank you is extended to all of the medical personnel at Summa for their care of Bill.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Derek Starr Redwine officiating. Friends may call 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St., Akron 44313.
