William Joseph Calhoun, of Akron, age 48, died unexpectedly and peacefully in his sleep on May 24th.
Born and raised in Akron, Bill was a lifelong resident and enjoyed all things Akron Zips, Aeros, Luigi's, Akron Art Museum, Stan Hywet, etc.. He attended St. Sebastian School and Walsh Jesuit High School, graduating in 1980. He earned three degrees from The University of Akron throughout his life: a B.A. in Psychology, a B.A. in Elementary/Middle school education and a M.A. in Special Education. He was a middle school language arts teacher in Akron Public Schools for 11 years. He first taught at Goodrich Middle School; when that closed, he moved to Goodyear Middle School.
Preceded in death by his father, Vern, he is survived by his mother, Marianne; wife of nine years, Cheryl, and their son, Samuel; brothers, Vern and Bob and his wife, Kathy; nephews, Tom and Jim; aunt and uncle, Joan and Tom Chase; uncle, Dean Tunberg; childhood friends, John Wargo and Dave Frank; and many cousins, neighbors and friends he made throughout the years from working for Akron Public Schools, Akron General Medical Center, Quonset Hut, Standard Coffee and Bisson's.
Bill learned from the Jesuits that to be of service to others is to serve God, and he embodied this principle. He would help family, friends and neighbors without hesitation with whatever they needed. He was the type of guy who would shovel the snow-covered driveways of the neighbors around him at 5 a.m. during a snowstorm or mow the lawn if they were out of town - he just did it without expecting anything in return. Bill loved reading, golf, baseball, hot dogs, listening to his music ranging from Miles Davis to Devo, from Free to Frank Zappa, digging in his flowerbeds or vegetable garden, and going for walks with his son Sam and finding golf balls! He was a good son, husband, father, brother, friend, neighbor and human being in general and will be greatly missed.
