William Oliver Eaton, 83, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Monday, September 4, 2017.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Judge Frank and Elzada (Spencer) Eaton; his brother, Frank; and his sister, Alice Ann Davies. He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Barbara "Bobbie " (Kingsbury); brother-in-law, William Kingsbury; daughter, Elizabeth (Eric) Weibel of Dayton; sons, John (Rachel) of Uniontown, and Bill of Akron; grandchildren, Catherine and Samuel Weibel, John, Timothy, Andrew, Alex, Heather, and Joshua Eaton, and Sadie Eaton; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Mason Eaton, and Arabella Eaton; nieces and nephews, Mary Neal Jones (Barry), Catherine Phillips, Jim Eaton, Jenny Davies, Heather Carlson
(Chris), and Charles Kingsbury; as well as great nieces and nephews, Spencer Phillips, Helen, Wade, and Charlotte Carlson.
Bill was born on November 19, 1933 in Huntington, West Virginia. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Huntington High School. He joined the Army in 1954 and served in the Army Security Agency in Germany during the Korean War. After returning to Huntington in 1956, he attended and graduated from Marshall University. Bill and Bobbie moved to Akron in 1961 where he taught as a librarian for the Akron Public Schools from 1961-1994. During his tenure, he was honored with the Martha Holden Jennings Award. Bill loved history and enjoyed telling stories about what he had read and learned. He also loved telling stories about his family history, as well as that of Bobbie's family. The arts and travel were also an integral part of his life. Bill and Bobbie took their children on many vacations over the years, and they learned a lot from their Dad about this wonderful country on those trips. Bill and Bobbie loved to travel and visited many parts of the United States, several European countries, as well as England and China.
The family expresses their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Trochelman and his staff at the Cooper Cancer Center, the people at Southern Care Hospice Services, and the staff and care team at First Light. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tuesday Musical Association, the Children's Concert Society of Akron, or the First United Methodist Church of Akron.
Visitation will be on Sunday, September 10th from 3:30-7:00 p.m. at the Billow Fairlawn Chapel, 85 N. Miller Rd., Akron and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The funeral will be on Monday, September 11th at 10:30 a.m. at the First United
Methodist Church of Akron, 263 E. Mill St., Akron, the Rev. Dr. Howard Pippin, Jr. officiating. Interment to follow at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
