William Martin Glazier

William M. Glazier, Ph.D.

William Martin Glazier, 93, passed away on May 21, 2018. Bill was born in Grand Rapids, MI to the late William M. and Margaret Glazier.

One month after Pearl Harbor, Bill, at the age of 17, dropped out of High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served a four-year enlistment. As a member of a machine gun section in the Fourth Marine Division, he made four landings on Japanese soil, receiving the Purple Heart on Iwo Jima. He also served during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers.

He holds Civil Engineering degrees from Michigan Tech, U of M, and WVU. As a civil Engineer, he has worked in consulting offices and in state and federal governments. Overseas, he has worked in Mali, Africa and the Dominican Republic. He was a professional engineer in Ohio, Michigan and Washington D.C.

In the educational field, he was an instructor at the engineering school, Fort Belvoir, VA., Civil Engineering Department at Cleveland State University, visiting Professor in Taiwan and China, and retired as a Professor Emeritus from the University of Akron after 26 years.

His masonic affiliations include Coventry-Akron Lodge #83 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite and Tadmor Temple Shrine. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and Firestone VFW Post 3383 where he served on the Honors Burial Team for over 10 years.

He pedaled his bicycle from Seattle, Washington to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware at the age of 75 and took up playing the tuba with the New Horizon Band at the age of 80. He played in the Akron Tuba Christmas and was the oldest player for many years.

He was preceded in death by wife of 57 years, Geraldine. He is survived by his children, James Garen, Richard (Cindy) Garen, Janet (Greg) Polles, Bill (Rhonda) Glazier; sister, Margaret Kole; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call TUESDAY, May 29, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Billow FALLS Chapel, 1907 23rd St., Cuyahoga Falls. A masonic service will be conducted by Coventry-Akron Lodge #83 at 12 p.m. with the funeral service to follow with Rev. David Loar officiating. Burial with Military Honors at 2 p.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH, 10175 Rawiga Rd.
