William (Bill) A. Singer died on June 8, 2012 at age 90. Bill, born on November 18, 1921 in Newark, New Jersey, was the son of Dorothy née Fleischer (housewife) & Benjamin Singer (attorney). A 1940 graduate of Chatham High School in New Jersey, Bill helped support his mother and 8 year old sister, Barbara, after his father died in 1940 at age 44. Bill's first job was with David D. Doniger & Co. With all of his friends entering the service, Bill gave up his deferment, joined the Army and spent the next three years as a medic, moving across Europe with the 111th Evac Hospital (precursor to the Korean War-era MASH units). Upon return to civilian life, he worked as a supervisor at David D. Doniger & Co., in Newark. In 1955, he made the decision to purchase two Manpower franchises in Akron and Canton, where he was later joined by his brother-in-law, Frederick B. Hennes, both pioneering the then-new temporary help industry. In 1968, Bill married Ethel Miller and was happily married to her for 45 years. Bill retired in 1994, after which he and his wife avidly pursued sailing on Lake Erie on their sail boat Kachina. Over the years, Bill & Ethel belonged to the Sandusky Yacht Club, Akron Power Squadron, Fourth Friday Dance Club, Akron City Club, Cascade Club, Jewish War Veterans, Akron Rotary Club and Temple Israel. Bill was a highly respected and cherished member of his family and community; he will be missed. Bill is survived by his son, Craig (Kristine) Singer; granddaughter, Calle Singer; grandson, Travis (Heather) Singer; great-grandchildren, Regan and Logan; nephews, Bruce Hennes (Regina Brett); Gary Hennes and Randy Hennes; niece Carol Bailey; and cousins Richard and Jerry Fleischer. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, who passed away in 2007; parents, Benjamin and Dorothy; and his sister, Barbara Hennes, who passed away in 1977 while living in Canton. Contributions in Bill's memory can be made to United Way.
